比較表現（比較級・最上級）
比較級・最上級、as ... as、not as ... as を使って程度や順位を比べます。
説明
比較表現は、ものの違いや程度の差を表します。
「兄は私より背が高い」「クラスで一番足が速い」「彼と同じくらい忙しい」のように、ものや人を比べて順序や程度を表すときに使います。
比較表現には原級・比較級・最上級の3つの形があり、形容詞の長さや語尾でルールが変わります。
差を言うときは than で比べる相手を示し、最上級では in / on / of で「どの範囲で一番か」を示します。

比較表現は、差があるか、同じくらいか、範囲の中で一番かによって形を選びます。

形容詞の長さや語尾によって、-er を付けるか more を前に置くかが変わります。

比較級（-er / more + 形容詞 + than）で「〜より…」が言えるようになる
比較級 で2つのものを比べて「A は B より〜だ」と言います。
短い形容詞には -er、長い形容詞には more を使い、than で比べる相手を示します。
2つを比べて尋ねるときは Which is + 比較級, A or B? の形にします。
比較級は、どちらを主語にするかで文の向きが変わります。事実が同じでも、前に出したい情報に合わせて形を選びます。

最上級（the -est / the most + 形容詞）で「一番〜」が言えるようになる
最上級は「〜の中で最も〜」「一番〜」という順位を表します。
比較級と同じく形容詞の長さで形が変わります。短い形容詞は the + 形容詞-est、長い形容詞は the most + 形容詞を使います。最上級にはふつう the を付けます。
3つ以上から尋ねるときは Which is the + 最上級, A, B, or C? の形を使います。
2つだけを比べるときは比較級、3つ以上の中で一番を言うときは最上級を使います。

as ... as で「同じくらい〜」が言えるようになる
as ... as は「A は B と同じくらい〜」と、2つを比べて差がないことを伝えるときに使います。
形容詞だけでなく副詞（fast / hard / well など）にも同じ形で使えます。
同じくらいなら as ... as、差を言うなら比較級 + than を使います。

比べる相手や範囲を表す語（than / in / of）の使い分けを覚える
比較文では前置詞で「何と比べるか」「どの範囲で一番か」を示します。
比較級では than で比較対象を、最上級では in（場所・集団）/ on（チーム）/ of（具体的な数）で範囲を表します。
例文
This box is heavier than that one.
この箱はあの箱より重いです。

富士山は日本で最も高い山です。
This is the most interesting of the three.

not as ... as で「〜ほど…ではない」が言えるようになる
not as + 形容詞/副詞 + as で「〜ほど…ではない」と言えます。as ... as の否定版です。

He is not as tall as his brother.
彼は兄ほど背が高くありません。
This book is not as interesting as that one.
この本はあの本ほど面白くありません。
I cannot speak English as well as my teacher.

間違えやすいポイント

比較級は、-er か more のどちらか一方で作ります。両方を重ねると比較級の印が二重になります。短い形容詞は -er、長い形容詞は more と使い分けます。

最上級も -est と most を重ねません。短い形容詞は the + -est、長い形容詞は the most + 形容詞、それぞれどちらか一方を使います。

比較の「〜より」は英語では than 一語で表します。日本語の「〜より」が「〜から」と感覚が近いため from を入れてしまいがちですが、from は「起点」を表す語で比較には使えません。than だけで「〜と比べて」の意味になります。

最上級は「唯一の1番」を表すので the が必要です。the tallest の形で使います。
She is as taller as her sister.

as ... as の間には原級を入れます。比較級 taller は than と一緒に使う形なので、as taller as にはしません。
This bag is the lightest of the two.
This bag is the lighter of the two.
2つの中で一方を選ぶときは比較級を使います。この形は発展的ですが正しい表現です。3つ以上なら the lightest of the three になります。
