another / other は数と特定性で選ぶ

品詞（形容詞か代名詞か）でも形が変わります。
another cup / I'll buy another.

使い分け
数と不特定 / 特定での使い分け
指すものが単数か複数か、不特定（どれでもよい）か特定（残り全部・もう一方）かで形が決まります。
不特定・単数 — Can I have another cup?
other / others不特定・複数 — Be kind to others.
the other特定・単数（もう一方）— the other is black
the others特定・複数（残り全部）— the others are yours
文法のルール
another は単数名詞に使う（an + other なので）。

another は an + other なので、必ず単数の名詞に使います。複数のものを指すときは other + 複数名詞にします。Can I have other cups? は「別のカップを何個かもらえますか」という意味です。
残りが1つに決まっているときは the other を使う。
I have two pens. One is red, and another is blue.

2つのうち決まった「もう一方」は the other です。another は不特定の「もう1つ」なので、残りが1つに決まっている場面では使いません。
不特定の「他の人々」は others。全体が決まっていないときは the を付けない。
Some people like tea, and the others like coffee.（不特定の他の人々のつもりで）

不特定の「他の人々」は others です。the others は「決まった集団の残り全部」を指すので、全体が決まっていない場面では the を付けません。
名詞を置かず代名詞として複数を指すときは others にする。

「他の人たち」と代名詞で複数を指すときは others にします。other は基本的に other people / other books のように名詞の前に置きます。名詞を置かずに「他の人・もの」と言うときは others を使います。
