「借りる・貸す」を表す borrow / lend の違い・使い分け

borrow は「(自分が) 借りる」、 lend は「(自分が) 貸す」です。日本語の「〜から借りる／〜に貸す」と方向を対応させると覚えやすいです。

borrow を使うとき

自分が誰かから物を借りるときに使います。借りた先は from + 人 で示します。図書館で本を借りる、友達からペンを借りるなど、もらって返す前提の動作です。

自分が誰かに物を貸すときに使います。貸す相手は lend + 人 + 物 または lend 物 to 人 の形で示します。

「(あなたが私に) ペンを貸してくれる?」と頼むなら lend です。 borrow は自分が借りる側なので、相手に頼むときに使うと方向が逆になります。
