「数・量」を表す number / amount の違い・使い分け
number は「いくつ・何人」という数、amount は「どれくらい」という量を表します。number of students と amount of water のように、後ろの名詞を数えるのか、量として捉えるのかで選びます。
使い分け早見表
ここでは「数・量」の名詞用法を比べます。money は金額を数値で示せても不可算名詞なので amount of money、coins は数えられるので number of coins とします。
number を使うとき
本・人・質問などを、一つ、二つと数えるときに使います。the number of ... は「〜の数」で、数そのものについて述べます。
number を使うときの例文
The number of students is increasing.
- 生徒の数が増えています。
Please count the number of chairs in this room.
- この部屋の椅子の数を数えてください。
amount を使うとき
水・時間・お金・仕事などを量として捉えるときに使います。a small amount of ... は少量、a large amount of ... は多量です。数えられる名詞にも amount が使われる場合はありますが、学習や改まった文章では number との区別を基本にしましょう。
amount を使うときの例文
Add a small amount of water to the soup.
- スープに少量の水を加えてください。
We spent a large amount of time on this project.
- 私たちはこのプロジェクトに多くの時間を費やしました。
the number of と a number of
the number of ... は「〜の数」なので、主語なら単数扱いです。a number of ... は「いくつもの・何人もの」という表現で、後ろの複数の人や物について述べます。

The number of visitors is high today.
- 今日は来場者の数が多いです。
A number of visitors are waiting outside.
- 何人もの来場者が外で待っています。
表現で変わる意味・ニュアンス
次の表現はどちらも使えます。伝えたい内容や場面に合わせて選びましょう。
We reduced the number of meetings.
We reduced the amount of time spent in meetings.
前者は会議の回数、後者は会議に費やす時間の量を減らしたという意味です。どちらを減らしたのかで表現を選びます。
間違えやすいポイント
The number of students are increasing.
The number of students is increasing.
主語の中心は students ではなく the number（数）です。この文では単数の is を使います。A number of students are ... とは区別しましょう。
