「機会」を表す chance / opportunity の違い・使い分け

chance と opportunity はどちらも「機会」と訳せますが、機会の訪れ方と改まり度が違います。chance は「可能性」の意味でも使えます。

「〜する可能性」を言うときは chance のみ

chance を使うとき

偶然や運の要素を含む「機会」を表します。日常会話で気軽に使え、「いつかチャンスがあったら」のような軽い文脈にも合います。さらに「雨が降る可能性」「成功する見込み」のような可能性・確率を表す用法もあり、これは opportunity にはない使い方です。

I had a chance to talk with my favorite singer.

好きな歌手と話す機会がありました。

There is a 50% chance of rain this afternoon.

午後は 50% の確率で雨が降ります。

意図的に活かしたい「機会」を表すややフォーマルな語です。仕事・学習・成長など、本人の努力で結果につなげる文脈で選ばれます。面接・ビジネスメール・スピーチでは chance より opportunity が好まれます。

This internship is a great opportunity to learn.

このインターンシップは学ぶ絶好の機会です。

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak.

お話しする機会をいただきありがとうございます。

「〜の可能性・確率」を表すのは chance だけです。opportunity に「確率」の意味はありません。

ビジネスや改まった場面では opportunity の方が自然です。chance だと「偶然の機会をくれてありがとう」と軽い響きになります。
